Stem operates the world’s largest digitally connected energy storage network across more than 40 utility territories across North America. And across Southern California, Stem operates more than 300 energy storage systems that provide controllable capacity to the utility.
Among our many industry firsts include the Hawaii Electric Company’s first virtual power plant (VPP), which successfully integrated large amounts of customer-sited solar. One of our solar and storage projects is the largest project in Massachusetts that participates in ISO-New England wholesale energy markets as well as the state’s Clean Peak Standard and Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) program. Plus, Stem was also the first provider to integrate energy storage as a demand response resource into California’s wholesale energy market.
Stem deployed the first energy storage VPP for California’s resource adequacy program, which simultaneously delivers distribution deferral value. More recently, we helped a large Midwestern utility deploy its first “non-wires alternative” (NWA) projects with energy storage where customer-sited batteries will avoid or defer a costlier substation upgrade.
Stem supports communications protocols like DNP3, allowing for seamless integrations with utility dispatch platforms. We have responded to more than 83,000 grid services. And Athena’s applications for utility users enable utility operators to schedule dispatches with a simple user interface and provides real-time operating visibility into system status and available capacity.
Stem offers full operational support through 24/7 site monitoring, alarm detection, and real-time controls, allowing us to respond to site and market conditions within seconds. We quickly diagnose and resolve both software and hardware issues to maximize availability.
Stem has the largest and most advanced suite of storage products on the market, with hardware combinations including AC- and DC-coupled solutions by leading OEMs such as Tesla, Sungrow, Powin, and SYL. Leveraging years of procurement expertise, Stem competitively sources hardware with the flexibility to find the right combination of equipment and warranties for your project. If your utility is comfortable procuring on its own, Stem can support you with design, deployment, professional services, and more.
Stem’s Athena platform maximizes energy storage and solar plus storage performance via industry-leading forecasting, optimization, and controls. Athena is the world’s most utilized, validated, and successful optimization software for clean energy resources, including energy storage, solar, and electric vehicles.

This massive project brings together more than 300 energy storage systems into two large Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) with a combined capacity of over 450 MWh to provide load relief to SCE and help stabilize the grid. Stem’s Athena AI automatically dispatches the VPPs and allocates capacity to each participating site when events are triggered. In August 2020, these systems helped reduce the effects of California’s blackouts, as reported in The New York Times.
